NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 1, 2002

Residential Parking Permit (RPP) Zone Enforcement Begins October 1

Department of Public Works (DPW) parking officers will begin enforcing the new RPP zones.

(Washington, DC) Following a lengthy grace period, residents in redistricted neighborhoods will have to display the new residential parking permits (RPP) that reflect the wards in which they now live. Beginning Tuesday, October 1, Department of Public Works (DPW) parking officers will begin enforcing the new RPP zones.

Although the new RPP zones were scheduled to be enforced beginning July 1, 2002, emergency legislation passed by the DC Council gave residents in transition areas an extended period in which to switch their residential parking stickers at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). New signage on residential streets indicates the appropriate zone sticker that must be displayed.

Every 10 years, the District of Columbia is required by law to redraw (“redistrict”) its ward boundary lines so that each ward has a fairly equal population distribution. When the boundaries shift, inevitably, some residents find that their homes are now located in another ward. As a result, some individuals living in neighborhoods with zoned parking restrictions may have to get new residential parking permit (RPP) stickers.

The RPP sticker allows DC residents in zoned parking areas to park on the street in their neighborhoods for extended periods of time. Vehicles parked in any zoned residential area without current and correct RPP stickers will be ticketed after two hours.
